Why family businesses get stuck
Many family businesses in Tamil Nadu grow well in the first generation, then slow down when roles, money and decisions are not clearly separated. Arguments at home turn into delays at work.
குடும்பத்தில் அன்பு இருக்கலாம்; ஆனால் தொழிலில் பொறுப்பு தெளிவாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.
Separate family roles from business roles
Being a son, daughter or brother is a family role. Sales head, accounts in-charge or production manager is a business role. Give each family member a written business role with clear responsibilities.
Agree who decides what
List major decisions such as pricing, hiring, big purchases and loans. For each, write who decides and who must be consulted. This prevents the same argument every month.
Pay salaries, then share profits
Pay family members working in the business a defined salary for their role, and handle profit-sharing separately. Mixing the two makes it hard to see whether the business is actually profitable.
Prepare the next generation
Let the next generation own one area with real targets, and review progress monthly. Respect experience, but allow new ideas to be tested on a small scale first.
Your first action this week
Sit with the family members in the business and write one page: each person's role, the decisions they own and how you will review results each month.
